Obtaining and modeling a “growth” mindset, rather than a “fixed” mindset, is one of the most powerful things teachers and leaders can do to lay the foundation for innovation and achievement at their schools, particularly as they seek to implement and sustain online and blended programs. What is a growth mindset? According to Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, individuals with a growth mindset believe their talents can be developed (through hard work, good strategies, and input from others); whereas people with a fixed mindset believe their talents are unchangeable, innate gifts. When an entire organization embraces a growth mindset, people are much more likely to embrace challenges, persist through setbacks, and sustain the effort necessary to become a better version of themselves.
