What’s the appeal of Xbox? Exploring The Problem of Student Engagement

Date: February 3, 2022
Time: 4:00–5:00pm
Facilitator(s): Jennifer Jaworski, iForward English Teacher

Put yourself in your students’ shoes. If you were them and given the choice, would you rather spend an hour learning in your class or playing with your friends on Xbox? Even if you are not a fan of gaming and given you probably love learning because you are an educator, is there a part of the “teenage you” that would just rather play games with your friends? What motivates teenagers to desire one activity over another? It’s likely not an intrinsic love of Shakespeare or quadratic equations. Using the “jobs to be done” theory developed by Clayton Christensen, this workshop will explore how to identify and tap into student motivation so that learning becomes a tool students desire.
